Board Elections

The IOUG Board of Directors elections are held annually in the February-March timeframe. A call for candidates is usually announced to the membership in November of the prior year. See current call for candidates information.

Board of Directors Mission

The structure and purpose of the the board of directors is governed by the bylaws of the Independent Oracle Users Group. The board of directors has the authority and responsibility for the day-to-day activities of the organization. However, the primary duty of the board is to concentrate on issues of strategic importance to the future well-being of the IOUG.

General Qualifications

  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership ability.
  • Prior experience with a volunteer organization.
  • Support from employer to fulfill the role of a board member.
  • Must be able to fill designated time commitments. (see below)

Time Commitment

  • Must be able to commit time required to the term of office set by the election procedures. (2 years)
  • Must be able to attend one conference per year, totaling 4-5 days.
  • Must be able to attend three board meetings per year, totaling up to 6 days.
  • Must be available to participate in a one-hour conference call every month.
  • Must be able to attend special conference calls or meetings called by the President.

General Responsibilities

  • Sets policy and strategic direction for IOUG.
  • Has fiduciary responsibility for IOUG activities. Reviews monthly financial statements.
  • Sets direction of IOUG's management firm to ensure that activities are carried out in accordance with IOUG's goals and objectives.
  • Approves and monitors general activity and budgets.
  • Maintains communication channels with Oracle and all levels of IOUG.
  • Participates in strategic planning sessions held by user groups, Oracle, or other organizations that require non-disclosure.
  • Must act in accordance with IOUG's bylaws.
  • Must be able to represent IOUG to other user groups.
  • Votes on issues presented to the board of directors.
  • Must be able to act in any capacity as designated by the board of directors.

Through interaction with IOUG, a director provides direction and develops policy and procedures that contribute to making IOUG a successful, sustained, highly effective organization.

  • A director's company can receive enhanced exposure and access to Oracle.
  • Several areas of expense reimbursement: complimentary conference registration and housing, travel for all board meetings and IOUG related events requiring board representation, etc.

Reasons for dismissal

  • Inability to attend board meetings on a regular basis.
  • Inability or unwillingness to act in a capacity designated by the board of directors.
  • Failure to fulfill the responsibilities of the office.
  • Failure to act in a manner consistent with IOUG's bylaws and/or policies.
  • Misrepresentation of responsibility and/or authority.
  • Misrepresentation of IOUG.
  • Unresolved conflict of interests with board responsibilities.
  • Breach of confidentiality.
