Unicode Migration in an SAP Environment
Karen Schuh, Eastman Kodak
Supporting multiple languages in today's world is a business requirement but very complicated from a technical perspective. SAP has provided several options to enable many languages from multiple code pages to be supported in a single system. The future solution is Unicode - a character-encoding schema containing nearly all characters used worldwide. Migrating to Unicode requires a complete unload and reload of the database to support the character set change and cannot utilize native Oracle tools due to the nature of the data. SAP's view of Oracle has changed over the years and DBAs need to adjust accordingly. There are also application and interface requirements to consider. Three technical options for the migration of the database will be presented along with a case study that includes two of the methods. Backup and recovery scenarios and the impact on disaster recovery will be discussed. Also reviewed, will be the change in database size and CPU and memory usage.
