IOUG User Sessions: Top Draws at Oracle OpenWorld 2008!

The greater Oracle customer community gathered once again in San Francisco for Oracle OpenWorld 2008. The IOUG was front and center at this year's event with a stellar line-up of customer-driven education sessions presented by topic experts. Many of its SIG Day and technical sessions had record-breaking attendance, including its new track on BEA.

SIG Day, which was a full-day of user-driven content focused on the IOUG's Special Interest Groups (SIGs), took place on September 21 and featured more than 45 technical sessions. Featured content included RAC, PeopleSoft, BI, Middleware, SAP, Stellent, Life Sciences, Linux, BEA and overall best practices. These sessions were the more popular Sunday offerings, with hundreds of Oracle professionals in attendance. The three most highly attended sessions were:

  • Oracle Security Risks, Tanya Baccam, SANS Institute
More than 330 attendees participated in this session, which focused on the Oracle Database risks that exist and the critical areas that should be checked when conducting an Oracle database audit.
  • Under the Hood of Clusterware, Alex Gorbachev, The Pythian Group
More than 220 attendees gained practical understanding of Oracle Clusterware/CRS and knowledge required for independent troubleshooting of Clusterware issues through this session.
  • Let's Get Physical: Success Through Storage Tuning, Michael Ault, Texas Memory Systems
More than 220 attendees participated in this session, which covered the physical side of tuning, including block size determination, partitioning, index fragmentation, array tuning, ASM and new technology.

IOUG's other technical sessions held throughout the week were well-attended, as well. The most highly attended sessions included:

  • Oracle Real Application Clusters Best Practices and Tuning in Oracle Database 11g, Thomas Canty, ServerCare, Inc.
More than 375 attendees learned how to identify areas in the Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) environment that are bottlenecks and opportunities for tuning, as well as changes that can be made to improve processes at various levels, best practices with items to avoid or implement, and Oracle RAC-related improvements to Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and Oracle Database 11g.
  • Manager's Guide to Oracle Database 11g New Features, Rich Niemiec, TUSC
More than 270 attendees learned which new features of Oracle Database 11g should be investigated for use by managers, as well as why and when to use new features such as Memory Target, Partition Advisor, Security Enhancements, Read-Only Tables, DDL Lock Timeout, Invisible Index, Virtual Column, Automatic Diagnostics Repository, SQL Plan Baselines, Result Cache Database Replay, SQL Repair Advisor, ADDM Enhancements, Interval Partitioning, and Partition Compression.
  • Materialized Views: A Re-View, Carl Dudley, University of Wolverhampton
Two hundred fifty attendees participated in this session and discussed the build of a test case scenario that shows the effectiveness of materialized views in terms of query performance.
