This session will illustrate how the features of the latest release of Oracle Database 12cR1 (22.214.171.124) promise potentially immense performance improvements for application workloads. We will review some actual examples of how implementing the new In-Memory Column Store (IMCS) offers revolutionary improvements in query execution time without any code changes. We will also demonstrate how the new In-Memory Aggregation feature set offers significant performance improvement for star queries while simultaneously reducing CPU utilization. The presentation will offer real-world examples of how best to deploy these features, including actual metrics that illustrate the improvement in query access times.
Through presentations and online demonstrations, this session will illustrate how to:
- Implement the In-Memory Column Store at tablespace, table, and columnar levels
- Improve DW and DSS query performance by orders of magnitude

Meet Our Speakers
Jim Czuprynski has 35+ years of professional experience in his information technology career. He has served diverse roles at several Fortune 1000 companies in that time - mainframe programmer, applications developer, business analyst, and project manager - before becoming an Oracle DBA in 2001. He currently holds OCP certification for Oracle 9i, 10g and 11g. He was awarded the status of Oracle ACE Director in March 2014.
Jim continues to write a steady stream of articles that focus on the myriad facets of Oracle database administration, with over 100 articles to his credit since 2003 at databasejournal.com and ioug.org. Jim’s blog, Generally … It Depends (http://jimczuprynski.wordpress.com), contains his regular observations on all things Oracle.
Jim is the co-author of Oracle Database Upgrade, Migration & Transformation Tips & Techniques published by Oracle Press in June 2015. He is also a sought-after public speaker on Oracle Database technology features. He has presented topics at Oracle OpenWorld, IOUG COLLABORATE, Hotsos Symposium, Oracle Technology Network ACE Tours, and Oracle User Group conferences around the USA.
Jim taught the core Oracle University courses, instructing 2000+ Oracle DBAs since 2005. He was selected as Oracle Education Partner Instructor of the Year in 2009.
Edward Whalen is an Oracle ACE Director and a Senior Technologist at Onx (www.onx.com), a consulting company specializing in database performance, administration, virtualization, and disaster recovery solutions with over 30 years of experience. He has extensive experience in system architectural design for optimal performance. His career has consisted of hardware, OS, database, and virtualization projects for many different companies. He has written seven books on Oracle products (13 books total), the last four from Oracle Press. He has also worked on numerous benchmarks and performance tuning projects with Oracle database products.
Ed works primarily as a consultant, speaker, and part-time trainer. His specialties include Oracle Performance Tuning, High Availability, and GoldenGate. In addition, Ed is working on several new book proposals.
Vijay Balebail has 20 Years in Oracle in support and Product management roles. He is part of Oracle database product development that helps partners use Oracle's latest technology stack and is involved in Design Reviews, POCs, Benchmarks and joint papers with partners.
