OAUG at IOUG Live! 2004
The International Oracle Users Group (IOUG) is pleased to announce that Oracle
Applications Users Group (OAUG) users will be presenting several sessions on
Wednesday, April 21st during IOUG Live! 2004. These Oracle Applications specific
presentations by OAUG members are a living example of the collaboration between
Oracle users groups. This collaboration is a sign of the times, demonstrating
each group's commitment to delivering relevant and timely educational to the
entire Oracle software user community.
Peter Gee, OAUG board member, will be introduced at a general session. The OAUG
technical sessions are as follows:
Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - 1:00-2:00pm
Oracle Applications Release 11i...if RAID, then RAC
Speaker: Kevin Dahl, Solution Beacon
RAID is the standard in nearly every organization's Oracle Database computing
environment. In fact, it's not a question of should RAID be used, but what form
of RAID should be chosen. Why has RAID become so pervasive? Answer: it is cost
effective and minimizes or eliminates downtime and data loss. RAC is now cost
effective and minimizes or eliminates downtime due to computer failure. The
answer to the question of whether or not to use RAC is nearly the same as the
answer to the question of whether or not to use RAID.
This presentation details how one company arrived at that same conclusion for
their Release 11i Oracle Applications environment and chose to implement Oracle
Apps Release 11i and RAC. Oracle9i RAC and 11i combined to meet their requirements
for an environment that is highly available.
Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 2:15-3:15pm
Tuning When You Cannot Touch the Code
Speaker: Mark Farnham, Rightsizing, Inc.
Several techniques are discussed for supercharging the execution of heavy duty
queries. How to determine effective indexes to add and minimize the chances
of damaging other execution plans is demonstrated at length along with the effects
of physically reordering the data in selected tables to match the dominant query
order. Isolation of hot objects onto hot media as a means of de-heating the
rest of the disk farm is shown.

A Breakthrough in Oracle Database Security-A Case Study in Restricting
DBA Access to Sensitive Data
Speaker: Ganesh Balasubramanian, Sierra Atlantic, Inc.
This presentation describes a customer case study solving the perennial problem
of restricting technical personal from access to sensitive data. Through an
added security layer, customers can address security concerns raised by Sarbanes-Oxley,
HR or sensitive payroll requirements. The presentation describes the solution
in detail, using confidential Oracle HRMS data, including the methodology for
setting up access restrictions to the technical user or to non-Oracle Applications
sessions.
