406: Don't Let Your Cloud Rain on Your Parade

Clouds are receiving hype as being the “next big thing.” However, dealing with clouds is not all sunshine. Depending upon the selected solutions, you may actually end up spending more money compared to a more traditional approach. In addition, there are common downsides of cloud-based implementations:

    1. Less control over infrastructure

    2. Unpredictable things happening with no notification

    3. When there are performance issues, it may be due to the cloud, it could be your system, or it may be both.

At Dulcian, we have been managing systems on both large expensive public clouds as well as inexpensive clouds provided by smaller companies.  Our experience has been that many unexpected things that can go wrong. There were up-sides too such as performance tuning efforts that immediately paid off because we could “release” all of the over-allocated resources.

Once again, remember that there is no such thing as a “silver bullet." The cloud has its pros and cons. Precise best practices depend on YOUR precise business case.  Although, there are some generic lessons, your long-term results can be improved by:

    1. Selecting the right cloud provider for your system

    2. Negotiating the right SLA

    3. Instrumenting your system to be able to easily detect cloud issues
