Web services is the technology for connecting services (
A service is an endpoint in a connection. The endpoint contains a standalone function (provider service) that can accept input (from a consumer service) to perform a task and then return a result.) Web Services has become the technology for achieving interoperability with different languages, operating systems and hardware platforms. Web services is a distributed technology for connecting different types of applications that are supported by all vendors. A web service is an application that provides some type of business functionality while hiding the details of how it works. Software applications can then use web services (software applications that provide specific functionality) to perform a task or operation.

| Fusion’s ADF BC in Depth |
ADF BC is the cornerstone of Fusion’s web development environment. It enables applications to integrate with the database. ADF BC has a very rich architecture and a host of sophisticated features that developers can take advantage of when building applications. However, if incorrectly used, many of these features can cause catastrophic failures including terrible performance (e.g. 12-minute tree refreshes), unmaintainable code, bizarre data locking bugs, and users swapping sessions and inadvertently seeing each other’s data. This hands-on session will illustrate some of the possible mistakes and show how to write code that avoids these pitfalls. The presentation will also discuss how ADF BC can enforce business logic without significantly impacting performance. |

| Unraveling the Mysteries of J2EE Web Application Communications -- An HTTP Primer |
In most environments, communications between the application and the user pass through various networking layers transparently. However, web application developers may need to write code that accesses browser request information or global information in the communication layer. For these purposes as well as for effective debugging, knowledge about the network communications layer is important. This presentation explains in plain language the mechanics of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) -- that forms the backbone of for all web communications. The presentation describes details of the roundtrip communication messaging between the client browser and application server. It also introduces important terms such as HTTP request and response, headers, cookies, Domain Name System, status lines, context root, message body, query parameters, URL, and HTTP methods. In addition, the presentation explains J2EE deployment files such as web.xml, server.xml, EAR, and WAR. |

One of the most complex pieces of implementing a Service Oriented Architecture is the security of services being implemented. Today there are numerous ways of securing web services and at least 3 different "standards" that address it. This discussion will cover the current standards for securing web services, the advantages and disadvantages of each, how Oracle supports each of the standards, as well as best practices for deploying secure and scalable web services. The Oracle Web Service Manager and SOA suite will be covered in this presentation. |
